The rain rain rain came down down down....*

I awoke this morning to the sound of rainfall against my bedroom window and thought to myself....how much rain can the ground actually hold?  My new rain barrel is certainly reaping the benefits.  My yard, on the other hand, can only take so much rain before a small lake starts forming in the lowest part of our property.  I am told by long-time neighbors that many years ago, a railroad track ran next to our 1-acre property, and that the "low spot" was created intentionally.  I have no doubts about the tracks once being there as I frequently come across rocks, stones and cinders when digging in that area of the yard; and occasionally, an old railroad spike will find its way to the surface.

Bittersweet...

As I gaze outside on this dreary, drizzly October day, I have bittersweet feelings.  Sad that the beauty of  the summer gardens are gone, fall colors are quickly leaving, and my gardens are now preparing for their winter dormancy.  On the other hand, I am somewhat relieved to know I will have perhaps 4 months of "rest" before heading back out into the gardens.  This "rest" phase lasts until about the end of January/early February for me (after the hustle-bustle of the holidays are over and my indoor projects start to become boring/tedious) which is when I then start pulling out my gardening magazines and begin dreaming of what's to come......
